Germany, 1949. Returning after sixteen years in exile, Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika (a remarkable Sandra Hüller) set out on a road trip across a newly divided Germany. As they confront a homeland still reckoning with the moral devastation of Nazism, tensions within their own complicated family rise to the surface. Polish auteur Paweł Pawlikowski crafts another powerful and haunting meditation on politics, morality, and the uneasy relationship between personal and national history.
