ASPEN FILM ANNOUNCES 2022 SUMMER OF CINEMA LINEUP

Aspen, CO (May 11, 2022) – Aspen Film is excited to announce its 2022 Summer of Cinema lineup, partnering with numerous Aspen-area organizations to bring a broad range of films to the community. Susan Wrubel, Aspen Film Executive + Artistic Director explains: “Aspen Film helps create unique and diverse summer film experiences, even though our three major festivals fall outside of this period. By collaborating with a myriad of other non-profit organizations, we can amplify voices and stories through our partnerships with like-minded groups. Cinema is an incredible way to represent all missions and media.”

This summer, Aspen Film will once again present a series of collaborations and special screening events. Slated to return are collaborations with: The Collective at Snowmass Base Village for Movies Under the Stars presented by The Collective in partnership with Aspen Film, the Aspen Institute Arts Program for the Eisner/Lauder New Views Documentaries & Dialogue Series, and Anderson Ranch for Movie Night at The Ranch. New for this year, Aspen Film and Here House will present Socrates Film Café events. Other special screenings include a drive-in screening of Amir Bar-Lev’s LONG STRANGE TRIP with Snowmass; a family film event with the USC Shoah Foundation, and Aspen Film’s long-running, monthly Indie Showcase films at the Isis Theatre. For the second consecutive year, Aspen Film also presents a Summer Filmmaking Camp for Teens hosted at the Red Brick Center for the Arts.

EISNER/LAUDER NEW VIEWS DOCUMENTARIES AND DIALOGUE SERIES 

For over a decade, the Eisner/Lauder New Views Documentaries and Dialogue series has provided audiences in Aspen with provocative new films and conversations with filmmakers and special guests. After two years of virtual programming, Aspen Film is excited to be back live this summer with screenings and conversations taking place at the Isis Theatre. This popular summer series is part of the Aspen Institute Arts Program and is generously funded by Leonard Lauder and Michael and Jane Eisner.

*Save the dates of July 18, 25, and August 1, for three impactful and recently released documentaries that will show at the Isis Theatre in Aspen.

HERE HOUSE SOCRATES FILM CAFÉ

The Here House Socrates Café in conjunction with Aspen Film is back by popular demand. Designed for engaged citizens and contributors, thought leaders, and intellectuals, Here House aims to transcend binary thinking. Each night will offer a discussion to enable the audience to engage in philosophical exploration in a safe and supportive environment. The Socrates Café will explore two contemporary issues: immigration and foster care, both prominent yet silent challenges in our local community, with two film screenings followed by an integrative discussion.

MOVIE NIGHT AT ANDERSON RANCH
Anderson Ranch Arts Center – 5263 Owl Creek Road | Snowmass Village, CO

Aspen Film in conjunction with Anderson Ranch Arts Center and Doña Vega Mezcal will present a highly-anticipated documentary: THE ART OF MAKING IT (2021) directed by Kelcey Edwards producer of THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING (2018). The evening kicks off at 6 pm with a cocktail reception featuring a Doña Vega mezcal tasting, and light bites provided by Anderson Ranch Arts Center’s Ranch Café. The film will be followed by a conversation with producer Debi Wisch and artists from the film: Felipe Baeza, Andrea Bowers, and Lisa Corinne Davis. The post-screening panel will be moderated by Douglas Fogle, the Ranch’s new Curator-in-Residence.

Honoring ‘The Days Between’ Jerry Garcia’s birth and death, Aspen Film, in conjunction with Snowmass will present a spirited drive-in movie. Get ready to dance and shake your bones for this defining rock documentary.

TWO ANIMATED JOURNEYS INTO HISTORY – Aspen Film in conjunction with the USC Shoah Foundation is proud to present a special family film event featuring the award-winning RUTH: A LITTLE GIRL’S BIG JOURNEY, based on the true story of prominent author and therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s childhood journey out of Nazi Germany. Produced by USC Shoah Foundation and Delirio Films with the generous support of Executive Producers Jodi Harris Schwartz and Andrea and Barry Cayton (16 minutes), this animated short film has been featured at numerous festivals and was most recently recognized as the Audience Award Winner at the 2022 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. After the ‘RUTH’ screening, the award-winning film, THE TATTOOED TORAH narrated by Ed Asner and based on the renowned children’s book that has educated young children about the Holocaust for generations. Directed and co-written by Aspen local Marc Bennett. The film is presented by The Goldrich Family Foundation and USC Shoah Foundation (21 minutes). The film has been an official selection of over 48 film festivals around the world, winning numerous awards including Best Animated Short and Best Adaptation.

Summer of Cinema is the lead-up to Aspen Film’s 43rd Annual Filmfest, running September 27-October 2, 2022, Tuesday-Sunday, at the Wheeler Opera House, the Isis Theatre, and the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale. Aspen Film showed an impressive number of Oscar®-nominated films in 2021, kicking off at Filmfest. In addition to the features, one of the Shortsfest 2021 winners, AFFAIRS OF THE ART, was Oscar®-qualified when it received the Jury Award for Comedy at Shortsfest last year.
